Developers are still working hard to bring even more content to Astro Bot in future updates, and while it’s early days yet, we do have some initial details to run with. The Stranded Scout, Nightmare Guardian, Greedy Ape, and Pro Driver Cameo Bots will only be available at the Crash Site once players have unlocked them in Astro’s Playroom. Yet I bet Astro Bot does significantly better than many titles that have spent years in development and cost double the price to make. I think this is clearly the frontrunner for game of the year now and it doesn’t look like there’s anything upcoming that has a chance of dethroning it. PS5 desperately needed this, now they need to reveal the big games 1st party is working on alongside the Pro and 2024 can be saved. It just reeks of ignorant and disconnect with PS history & fanbase.

Same with racing, my favourite racing games are from the past because modern ones suck. Nothing else has come close this gen. So it’s great to hear the follow up game is even better. I play with my controller mic off by default, and I’d find lifting it up to my mouth to be immersion-breaking.

PS5 pack-in Astro’s Playroom was a taster dish, teasing players with a short but sweet experience; Astro Bot, then, is the full three-course meal.

Again, it’s virtually flawless and I didn’t encounter a single drop anywhere else in the game. Oddly, Astro can only ever survive one hit, which can be annoying as 90% of the time the only thing that ever kills you is enemies firing projectiles, but the game is so heavily checkpointed it’s never really a problem. Others are less straightforward, such as boxing gloves that concertina out but can also be used to attach to objects (that appear to be covered in jam) to pull them or use them to swing onto other platforms. One power-up can suck up various liquids from the ground to create platforms of different consistencies, while another slows down time and is used in a variety of clever ways. The enemies being copycats are a slight shame, but the visual design is very good, with everything also clearly being mechanical, rather than just organic, which looks great when it’s subtly cybernetic trees and animals.

You can even attack your robotic allies (when they’re standing on the goal) if you want just for kicks. This is what I tend to like about platformers, attacking non-playable characters just for the heck of it and for laughs to get a reaction from them. It’s a shame that recent platformers don’t have that level of polish these days. Due to the fact there are so many objects and non-playable characters to interact with, this game feels like a tech demo but I’m not saying this as a bad thing.

Ingenious one-off mechanics like this feel like they could serve as the basis for an entire game; that’s how well-crafted they are.
